What Horse Racing is on Boxing Day?

There is plenty of racing action taking place, but there is no doubting the race of the day is a vintage renewal of the King George VI Chase.

Racecourses around the country will see hoards of racing fans enter the tracks. Kempton, Wetherby, Leopardstown, Sedgefied, Down Royal, Huntingdon, Market Rasen, Fontwell, Wincanton, Limerick and Wolverhampton.

Wetherby
Harry Skelton will be the jockey that many are watching. Skelton has enjoyed 125 winners since April, just six wins shy of his record for the whole of last season.

He heads to Wetherby with Captain Chaos in the feature race, the Rowland Meyrick, as well as Sounds Of Italy (12.30), No Getaway (1.00), Get On The Yager (1.35) and Miss Spent (2.45). All rides seem to have excellent chances at the West Yorkshire track.

Kempton Park
The race everyone will be watching is of course the King George VI Chase. This years race looks set to be an epic one with former winners Might Bite and Thistlecrack racing. Classy performers Bristol De Mai, Native River, Politologue and Waiting Patiently will also be featured in the race. Might Bite and Politologue both look good choices.

Leopardstown.
The Racing Post Novice Chase (2.20) only looks to have one winner. The leading Irish contender is the Gordon Elliott-trained Mengli Khan. The five-year-old was an impressive winner on his sole chasing start, winning by ten lengths, and is a warm favourite to land this Grade 1 contest. Other prospect in the two-mile novice chasing division are Kalashnikov and Lalor.

The Indian Premier League is a Twenty20 cricket league in India contested during April and May of every year. Competing teams are from Indian cities and some states.

IPL History

The league was founded by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).   However, the original concept for the Indian Premier League was devised by Lalit Modi in 2007. Modi based the new venture on the English Premier League and the NBA.  This venture was due to the reaction to the formation of the Indian Cricket League.

There are currently eight teams, each team plays each other twice in a home-and-away round-robin format in the league phase, which climaxes with a knockout finale.

The eight franchises were created during the first edition in 2008. An auction was held where investors purchased a place in the league. The franchises were assigned to host cities throughout India.

Teams acquire players via three methods:

  • Annual player auction – Every December the player auction takes place. Players sign up for the auction setting their own base price. They are then bought by the franchise that bids the highest for them. Unsold players at the auction are eligible to be signed up as replacement signings.
  • Trading players with other teams during the trading windows
  • Signing replacements for unavailable players

A player has a one year contract. The franchise has the option to extend the contract by one or two years.

Betting on the IPL

Each season, between April and May, millions are wagered on the outcome of the league. The bookmakers are well aware of how popular it is and have all of the latest IPL odds for every match. Which is the Best Betting Exchange?

Back in 2000 betting exchanges were a novel and addictive method of betting. An alternative from the traditional bookmaker as they allow anyone to lay or back anything at all.

There are four online betting exchanges – Betfair, Betdaq, Matchbook and Smarkets. Betfair is assumed to be the market leader. Betdaq clams to have 7% of the market. Matchbook and Smarkets have a lesser share. This would suggest that Betfair is the best betting exchange?! It is certainly the most popular, however it isn’t without flaws.

Best Mobile Betting Takes a Quick Look at all four Betting Exchanges below:

Betfair
The first betting exchanges Betfair and Flutter.com merged back in 2001 (some say that Betfair took over Flutter.com). Betfair is the leading position in the betting exchange market. They charge the biggest rate of commission on all winning bets, charging somewhere between 5 and 7 percent of the net winnings for most markets.

Since 2008 they introduced a premium charge for wagerers whose winnings are particularly high compared to the amount of commission they pay. In 2011 they raised its Premium Charge to 60% for some customers. This is the main disadvantage of using this company over the smaller sharks.

New customers will be attracted by the free bet offer and existng customers can take advantage of a plethora of promotions, and have access to a plethora of great betting features that are becoming essential in this age.

Betdaq
Betdaq is the second largest betting exchange operator with approximately 7% market share. It was founded by Dermot Desmond in 2000 and since 2013 it has been owned by Ladbrokes plc. It is the second largest company in the UK and the largest betting exchange technology provider in the world. Like all companies they charge a commission on all winning bets, which is set at 2 percent of the net winnings for most markets; this can vary depending on the amount of commission that is paid.

This company does not have a premium charge like Betfair. One of the obvious reason to use them.

There is a new customer offer available and a range of promotions available to all customers.

Matchbook
Matchbook claims to have the lowest commission and the best odds. They are driven by cutting edge technology and a focus on offering value back to there customers. They only offer a few markets but are looking at ensure that they have critical mass along with the best price and liquidity offering in the industry.

The rate of commission works in the following way: there are two different commission rates, depending on whether you accept another user’s offer, or whether they accept your offer. If you accept an existing offer in a market the standard commission rate is 1.5%. If you post an offer, which another user then matches, the standard commission rate will be 0.75%.

Keeping their commission levels low will certainly attract new customers. Until the end of the year the are offering zero commission to new customers. There are also a few offers available for existing customers.

Smarkets
They allege that they allow you to back and lay with the best betting odds and lowest commission on all major sports and politics. They have small margins and industry – low 2% commission. It’ not as low as Matchbook’s but certainly much lower than Betfair’s. The website is visually attractive, quick to access and easy to navigate. They don’t appear to have any new customer offers or promotions to keep customers coming back for more.

Which is the Best Betting Exchange?

That’s a tough one. If you want low commiosn, are not bothered that at times there might be less liquidity in the markets then choose Smarkets or Matchbook. But if you need a plethora of betting features, plenty of liquidity, great odds, superb offers choose Betfair. Should you want to avoid the premium charge but still want liquidity and promos choose Betdaq.

How Old Do You Have to be to Bet on Horses in the UK?

18+ logoIn the UK there are various ways that you can place a bet on the horses. High street bookmakers, the Tote, online sportsbook and horse betting apps are just some of the available methods.

The UK Gambling commission regulates sports betting in England, Scotland, the Isle of Man, Northern Ireland and Wales. High street and online from operators have to obtain a necessary licences issued by the Gambling Commission and local authorities.

The Legal Age to Bet on the Horses
In the UK you have to be over the age of 18 to place a bet on the horses and other sports whatever the method of gambling you choose to use.

As part of the licence granted by the UK Gambling commission bookmakers have to ask you what your date of birth is to ensure that you are old enough to use their services. If anyone under the age of 18 places a bet on the horse racing (or any other sport) they are committing a criminal ace.

Some people believe you can bet at the age of 16, in certain situations like the lottery you can place a bet at 16. But to gamble on sports you need to be over the age of 18.

Social Responsible Adverting
Bookmakers and Online Sportsbooks have been coming under a bit of flack recently from the UK Gambling Commision due to their adverting before the watershed.

Industry Codes make it a specific requirement that every television and print advert should carry clearly either a ‘18+’ symbol or a ‘no under 18s’ type message.

The advertising of adult-only gambling products or product suppliers should never be targeted at children. Bookmakers frequently sponsor horse races and football teams. The logos of sports-books can not appear on children’s shirts.

Bookmakers are allowed to advertise before the 9pm watershed as long as their adverts are at the same time as the sports event is being aired live on television. These pre-watershed television adverts cannot include sign-up offers which are targeted solely at new customers; and pre-watershed television advertising cannot make reference to other gambling products that would not normally qualify for pre 9.00pm exemption.

The Be Gamble Aware website address also has to be included as some people develop a problem with gambling.

After the introductory blub it’s time to get down to the nitty gritty. Please bear in mind that the actual specifics of placing the bet can vary from site to site so after you have decided upon an online sportbook (see the link above), have a quick peruse of the bookmakers FAQ’s if you are stuck.

Simply add you stake and you will see the potential returns if the bet is successful. You will get a message to say that you bet has been confirmed.

Things to Note
Some bookmakers have a minimum amount you can bet (also called the stake).
Once you have placed your bet, check your results when the match, race or event has finished.

What to Do If You Win
After your bet has been confirmed as a winner (If it’s a horse race, jockeys need to return to weigh in room after the race for a few checks before they are confirmed as winners), log back into your account and you will see your winnings in your account. You can either use these to place another bet or withdraw them.

My mum successfully followed this guide and placed a winning bet with one of our suggested bookmakers. If she can do it, we’re sure you can. But if you do have issues, check our your chosen bookmakers FAQ’s or give their customer service team a ring.

Is Sports Betting Legal?

UK Gambling Commission LogoAll of the traditional brick-and-mortar bookmakers operate the same games and bets online as they do in the local betting shops. But online sites and mobile apps add a level of convenience to the player’s experience. The internet and mobile technology has revolutionised the way we bet on sports.

However, online sports betting is not legal in all countries around the world, the US being the major country that banned online wagering. Fortunately it is legal throughout most of Europe including the UK. Remote gambling is regulated at a government level.

The UK’s 2005 Gambling Act regulates sports betting, gaming and participating in the lottery from a remote location either via the internet, telephone, television, radio or any other electronic technology.

In 2014 the remote gambling act required remote gaming companies to register for a licence. A separate license is required for each segment of gambling offered to UK players. Poker, casino, sports, bingo and lotteries all require unique licensing.

The UK is now one of the most tightly-regulated online betting markets in the world. If a company accepts UK players and does not obtain a licence they will face criminal charges.

Gaming companies operating within the UK have to pay point of consumption tax of 15 percent. Since point of consumption tax was introduced online gaming companies have had to alter the way they operate as they cannot keep operating costs at a minimum. Many operators left the UK after point of consumption tax was introduced as they simply couldn’t afford to stay. So which bookmakers still operate in the UK? As it happens, only the legitimate online bookmakers still operate in the UK territory, a list of the best of these can be found over on our sports betting apps page. Many of those listed operate the largest online and mobile sportsbooks were previously one of the biggest bookmakers on the high street. are also bookmakers in the UK or were in the past. Names such as William Hill, Betfred, 888Sport, William Hill and Ladbrokes will be familiar to you. Some have never operated a high street store but now operate some of the most successful online and mobile sites, Betfair and the Betfair Exchange are names that spring to mind.

Because sports betting is not legal in all countries bookmakers are required to verify your location. In order to verify your location the bookmaker will use your IP address or when you access mobile software the smartphone app will use the location service. You will be rejected from betting if outside of the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sports Betting and it’s Regulation within the UK
